LATHE WORK

M10 tap manufacture

The tap is an M10 x 1.25 (metric fine pitch) and is to be used specifically to clean out the threads on the LH handlebars of the Yamaha XS650 motorcycle (the RH handlebar is a left-hand thread) to enable the re-mounting of rear view mirrors.  The threads are cut into aluminium alloy castings so the tap does not have to work in hard material.

The tap is manufactured in silver steel and heat treatment will not be necessary for this application.

Use of the fixed steady

The following pictures show another use of the lathe, in particular, the first time the fixed steady has been put to use.  A piece of fibreglass tube (originally part of a military tent pole) was faced off square so that it could be used to insert oil seals into the top of motor bicycle fork tubes.
